The Engineer’s House

Hammersmith, London

A whole-house refurbishment and extension in Hammersmith for clients based overseas, designed to transform a fragmented former student house into a cohesive family home. The project focused on clarifying the plan, improving daylight and establishing a strong sense of continuity between existing spaces and new interventions.

At ground floor, circulation was reworked to strengthen connections between rooms. A new opening was introduced between the kitchen and front reception, allowing spaces to be linked or separated as required using sliding pocket doors. Crittall-style glazed doors were installed between the hallway and front reception, maximising borrowed light while retaining a clear spatial hierarchy. Original tiled floors in the hallway were carefully refurbished and extended, reinforcing continuity through the plan.

Bespoke joinery was developed throughout, including asymmetrical cabinetry in the front reception, finished in Green Smoke by Farrow & Ball. These elements introduce rhythm and storage while contributing to a layered interior.

The bathrooms were conceived as moments of heightened intensity within the house. Drawing inspiration from the Alhambra, the brief was to create a sense of richness and drama at a compact scale. Cement tiles with arabesque motifs are paired with deep green zellige tiles and a solid brass bath front, creating spaces that feel luxurious and immersive.

Throughout the house, material choices and detailing balance restraint with moments of richness, resulting in an interior that feels considered, cohesive and quietly expressive.
