The Fifties House

The renovation and extension of a former 1950s council house in Kennington, London. Integral to this project was exposing the existing fabric of the building, deciding what was of value and should be retained and what to strip away. As so often, it became a balance between letting the space speak for itself and meeting the requirements of building regulations. As the building started revealing itself to its occupiers, they grew to appreciate the history and historical styling of the property, and we in turn responded to our clients’ developing awareness. This is particularly apparent in the kitchen and main staircase, which became the two centre points of the design and nod to its mid-century history.
