The Archaeologist’s Barn

Edale, Peak District National Park

The conversion of a traditional stone barn in Edale, within the Peak District, reworking an existing agricultural building to support contemporary living while retaining the clarity and robustness of its original form.

The project was shaped by a close reading of the barn’s structure and setting. Interventions were carefully limited, allowing the primary volume to remain legible while introducing new elements only where required to support habitation, light and thermal performance. Openings were considered in relation to existing elevations and views, maintaining the building’s relationship to the surrounding landscape.

Material choices and detailing were developed to sit quietly within the existing fabric, with new insertions clearly expressed but restrained. The resulting scheme balances the practical demands of modern use with a respect for the barn’s agricultural origins, allowing the building to adapt without losing its sense of purpose or place.
